It has emerged 97% of Opal card users are worst off since the NSW Government changed the public transport ticketing system last September increasing the average fare by 6%. A freedom of information request obtained by The Sydney Morning Herald shows the average revenue for the State Government rose by almost 9% to nearly $28m a week. Cubic Corporation which operates the Opal card system has reported high sales in Australia for its September to December period driven by additional system development and services provided to their customers in Sydney. The rise in revenue appears to be due to the increase of people opting to use a ferry and light rail, while more commuters are taking advantage of the transfer discount encouraging them to switch modes of transport.
