Nearly a third of the buses relied on by Sydneysiders to travel to and from work each day have clocked up enough kilometres to travel to the moon and back.
Documents obtained by the NSW Opposition show that the number of buses that have travelled the equivalent distance has reached 29 per cent of the Sydney based fleet.
The number of buses that have travelled the round trip of 756,000 kilometres has grown by 136 buses in the past year from 500 buses in 2015 to 636 in 2016.
Despite the fleet becoming increasing worn down the Baird Government has only added 13 new buses into the fleet in the last six months.
The most travelled bus has continued to operate on Sydney’s roads despite travelling 1,571,195km since it first came onto roads 23 years ago in 1993. The bus is now based in Kingswood.
Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Transport Jodi McKay
“Most commuters would be horrified to know that the bus that’s taking them to work each day has been around for longer than we’ve had access to the internet.
“Commuters have a right to demand that Sydney’s buses are at least from the current century.
“When you hop on the Government run bus each morning you expect that its meeting all the necessary checks and balances.
“Transport Minister Andrew Constance has failed to take the small steps to deliver a giant leap for Sydney’s commuters.”
