Jodi McKay, Member for Strathfield, has today tabled a petition signed by more than 800 Inner West residents calling on the Government to reverse their backflip on the location of the M4 East Tunnel.
Since the project was announced in 2012, the NSW Government has maintained the tunnel would run under Parramatta Road. However, the recent detailed design plans show the tunnel has been relocated and will run under around 500 homes in Croydon, Burwood, Ashfield and Concord.
“I believe it’s important the Minister understands the significance of this backflip and the impact it will have on my community. Everywhere I go in the local community, the people of the Inner West tell me they want to know why Mike Baird thought it was fine to go back on his word and put the structural integrity of hundreds of homes at risk”, Ms. McKay said.
Ms McKay said she was very concerned the project’s Environment Impact Statement (EIS), which the Government tried to hide for months, showed the route of the tunnel was altered to allow high rise development along Parramatta Road.
“This change was motivated by property developers, rather than community interest.
“Mike Baird and Duncan Gay said this tunnel would run under the homes of residents in the Inner West. It’s time they honored that commitment and stopped putting the interests of developers before the interests of local residents.
“This petition shows local residents expect the Government to restore the previous route and put the tunnel where it belongs – below Parramatta Road”, Ms McKay said.
