Ms JODI McKAY (Strathfield) [5.53 p.m.]: I live in an area where there is always something to celebrate and I wish to talk about some of those achievements tonight. I bring to the attention of the House the enormous community contribution of Harry Delaney. I congratulate Harry on his 52 years of voluntary service to the St John Ambulance and his long association with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union. On Australia Day the professional and personal contributions of Australians around the country are recognised. I congratulate the 2016 Burwood Senior Citizen of the Year, Alex Pirie. I ask that this House notes his extraordinary commitment to the Burwood community through the Burwood RSL Sub Branch and Club Burwood. I recognise his leadership as president of the Burwood RSL Sub Branch since 2008 and vice-president of Club Burwood since 2013. I commend Alex for his active involvement in projects such as the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway, Concord Hospital and Legacy.
I congratulate the 2016 Burwood Young Citizen of the Year, Deniz Emul, and ask that this House notes her involvement in the Burwood Council Youth Advisory Group as a student of Burwood Girls High School and her commitment to projects such as Anzac Connect, Different People Different Voices and the Wangal Park Implementation Advisory Group. I congratulate the 2016 Burwood Citizen of the Year, Belinda Noonan, on bringing the news of the inner west to the people of Burwood, Canada Bay, Strathfield and Ashfield. Belinda has been the editor of the Burwood Scene since 2006 and had eight years with the Strathfield Scene. It is important to recognise the importance of local news to communities and the role that the Burwood Scene plays in ensuring the inner west has a voice on issues important to its residents. I congratulate the 2016 Strathfield Citizen of the Year, Ivana Morris, on her volunteer services to the Starlight Children's Foundation. I congratulate the 2016 Strathfield Young Citizen of the Year, Jafer Naim, on his involvement in the Strathfield Youth Engagement Advisory Committee, Youth Week celebrations, and his work on the school's representative council.

I thank the Burwood Lions Club for its work in supporting the local community. I congratulate Mr Mathalai Somu on his book of Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, which is the first book of Aboriginal stories translated into the Tamil language. This book ensures the rich culture of the Aboriginal people is shared and respected by all Australians. On behalf of this Parliament, I acknowledge Mathalai Somu and his historic work in capturing the stories of Aboriginal people in Tamil, which is one of the oldest and most treasured classical languages in the world. I bring to the attention of the House the significant contribution made to the community of Strathfield by St Martha's Catholic Church at Strathfield. In doing so, I thank the Strathfield Malayalee community for their commitment to the parish. I recognise the Strathfield Malayalee community's recent donation of $17,000 to St Martha's and their wonderful 2015 Layasandhya event.
