Labor moves to ban MPs from accepting property developer commissions

Share on Twitter Share on facebook

NSW Labor Leader Jodi McKay is moving to ban Members of Parliament from accepting commissions from property developers.

Ms McKay today spoke to the Independent Commission Against Corruption Amendment (Property Developer Commissions to MPs) Bill 2020.

"No member of Parliament should be moonlighting with property developers to earn a quick buck," Ms McKay said.

“If you use the office you have been elected to so you can enrich yourself, your family, or your mates then you do not belong in Parliament.”

Two weeks ago Labor successfully changed the law to make it illegal for Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries to receive commissions or payments from prohibited donors including property developers.

This Bill would prohibit all members of Parliament from seeking or accepting commissions from property developers.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption recently heard evidence the disgraced Liberal MP Daryl Maguire accepted commissions from property and that the Premier congratulated him with the words: “Congrats!!! That’s great!!! Woo hoo!”

“What we’ve seen in recent months and the failure of the Premier to take any responsibility undermines what we do in this place,” Ms McKay said.

“This behaviour is not acceptable. That perception must change.

“It’s time to stand up for democracy and our public institutions.”
