NSW Labor has forced the Berejiklian Government to accept changes to the NSW Ministerial Code of Conduct, made under the ICAC Act, to ban Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries from seeking or receiving commission payments from property developers.
It follows evidence given at the Independent Commission Against Corruption by the disgraced former Liberal MP Daryl Maguire, and will prohibit commissions paid directly or through third parties.
The NSW Labor Leader Jodi McKay said: “It is shocking that such an amendment is necessary. However, revelations in the ICAC this week show reform is urgently needed.”
Daryl Maguire had a number of schemes to enrich himself for retirement; to promote the interests of developers, assist them to promote their proposals and obtain approvals - and to charge a commission payment for doing so.
The Leader of the Opposition in the NSW Legislative Council, Adam Searle said: "The actions of Mr Maguire, which were known to the Premier who is supposed to uphold high standards, show that specific provisions are needed to ensure this disgusting attempt by those in high office to misuse their position to enrich themselves is banned."
